CONTENT NOTE: birth discussion and imagery, homebirth, hospital transfer

Soooo apparently I haven’t blogged this year at all…. so welcome to my first blog of 2021… in late April, haha! It has been a really busy start to the year with babies including a suuuper special one! My cousin Lisa started growing a much-wanted bebe in 2020 and I was honoured to be asked to be her birth support person, as she embarked on solo motherhood by choice. Her bebe was due a week after my birthday, and I felt confident that Bebe would be post-dates, I mean most first babies are, right?! HA! She really didn’t want her bebe to come on my birthday which I totally get cos I had a bebe (almost 8 years ago) that was due around her birthday lol! So with all that background…. let’s begin…

We did multiple maternity photo shoots, as you do when you’re close both emotionally and geographically haha! First up: a sunset session with her mama, my Aunty Isabel, and a couple of her pregnant friends in mid February at Perry’s Paddock, Woodvale. We lucked out with a seriously perfect sunset! And most importantly, what a MAMA POSSE amirite?! Boss.

One of Lisa’s pregnancy goals was to do a handstand heavily pregnant and she nailed that in late February at 36 weeks, at a super special black & white shoot at a top secret location *cough* my mum’s house *cough*. So proud of this mama as this was hard work and isn’t she incredible?! She’s one of those people it’s hard to be friends with: got her pilot’s licence for no reason other than thought it’d be cool (eyeroll), did a full Ironman in USA while vegan for funsies (yeah no), and has done cold immersion training in the actual snow with Wim Hof himself (snort).

Speaking of hard work, at around 8:30am on Wednesday March 10, at 39 weeks, Lisa let me know that she was feeling some things. (You might wonder if this was my birthday… and you’re close, it was the 9th, haha! So she managed to hang on a few extra hours!) She had planned to be at the Birth Centre, but in very late pregnancy a bunch of things happened that meant she decided on a homebirth. A tonne of work (her) and hand holding with a few photos (me) later, Bebe arrived at 5:58pm. She was INCREDIBLE as was her midwifery team lead by Naomi Newman of Calmic Birth. An absolute warrior goddess making our ancestors proud. (It’s hard to attend births and not believe there are cosmic forces at play while women bring their babies earthside. Always magical.) Anyway, Bebe had a bit of swollen head, so unfortunately we don’t have any post-birth photos as we quickly popped into KEMH to get it all checked out (totally fine of course!). Check out this post to meet Bebe and hear all about him! Here’s a few G-rated birth photos of the goddess in action.

TO BE CONTINUED! Meet Bebe in this post here.

Look forward to capturing your family story soon xxx
