Before we get started, this is a real family (my besties; they’re not models! But they have done a few shoots with me which defo helps), and this session is at Parker and Stone studio in Osborne Park. And that couch requires a special mention, does it not?! If you’re into this mix of luxe and industrial, this is the spot for you!

Soooo….. don’t take this the wrong way, but occasionally, people get in their own way at photo shoots, especially with kiddos! And when I say people…. I honestly mostly mean dads, and grandparents, sorry folks! It’s the mamas that book me, choosing me for my style, have the most faith in me, and know their kids the best. It’s just how our society (ahem, patriarchy, but that’s a diff blog post) works! We love our dads and grandparents, a lot. But sometimes, they need a little lesson on how to let a girl do her job!

Here are my top 6 tips for an excellent photo shoot with the whole fam:

1.Have a little faith! You’ve chosen me, and I am so honoured! I know your family memories are precious to you, and hopefully you’ve chosen me cos you love my work and style. If that’s not the main reason you chose me, that’s not an ideal start. Definitely choose a photog whose work you love! It’s ok if it’s not me because I want everyone to have photos they love and there’s room for everyone! These tips will serve you well regardless.

Once you’ve chosen your professional, in any field for any reason, you gotta have a little faith and let them work. I want to work with you to create what you want, in my style. When it comes to the kiddos, give me a chance to connect with them. Mine are 11 and 8, and I was a school teacher for 14 years, and an international nanny and childcare worker, so I’ve got this! Aaaand, I also know enough to know that kids can always surprise you, haha! But seriously, I can handle anything your kids throw at me, and yep, that includes bodily fluids from various orifices #beenthere #donethat. I know mums worry about this, so please let this be the last word on that subject.

2. Talk to the fam beforehand. That originally said kids, but you know what, dads sometimes need a talking to, too, lol slash eyeroll. It’s all in the prep. Explaining why you want photos, and maybe showing them some photos a friend had recently, or a family blog post here will help everyone to see why you want to capture some memories. I promise I make it as fun as possible! And I offer short shoots and lots of locations to please even the fussiest three year old! Also ensuring everyone has slept, eaten and been to the loo is helpful when you can! But you already know that part cos #mumlife

3. Dress coordinated and comfy. Matching is out, coordinated is in (unless you want to be matchy for a special reason of course!). I have a Style Guide I send which has examples of style and colour coordination, as do most photogs these days, so don’t worry about that. You do NOT need to buy new clothes! I’d prefer you’re all comfortable, especially the kiddos. Comfy kids can relax which is ideal. Watch out for slippy straps and big frills and short skirts, they can be tricky but honestly, anything goes.

4. Relax and have fun. The best way to be is yourselves, and everyone needs to know that. Interact, play, have a little tickle or a thumb war; be your usual selves as much as you can. Be snuggly and give them a smooch! I totally get how being in front of the camera can be awkward, and I do my utmost to chat and tell some truly awful jokes to help out, haha. It isn’t necessary to look at me or the camera unless I ask you to, or hold any stiff poses. A photo shoot is actually all about tiny little moments of connection with love and laughter. Above all, stay positive; the kids echo your mood!

5. Let your kids smile naturally. There is nothing worse than telling a child to smile. I will literally never say that, because nothing is more awkward for anyone really. If they’re not smiling at you, there are very few children who have resisted my antics when I’m given the chance to connect with them and I almost always get a natural smile from them! Photogs are literally begging you: please don’t stand behind us yelling at kids to smile, “say cheese”, or “look normal”. Being silly yourself is more likely to get the facials from them you’re after!

6. Bring snacks and a fave toy or 2. If things go awry and your kiddo is super not in the mood to be smiley, we can capture some real life snuggles with you and play with their favourite things, which is a lovely way to capture the age they’re at, and that really is what it’s all about after all.

Look forward to capturing your family story soon xxx
